Road Ride Classifications
Below are brief descriptions of each of the general group road ride classifications. They aren’t hard and fast rules but simply a guideline to help you make the right choice. The posted speeds listed below are the typical speed that the lead rider will try to maintain. The actual moving average (pace) for the entire ride are typically lower to account for traffic stops, weather, terrain, etc. But remember if you don’t think that you can complete the entire ride at the posted speed, try out ride at the next slower classification.
The faster rides are ‘DROP’ rides which mean that if you cannot keep up the pace, you will be dropped and expected to return to the starting point on your own. The moderate and slower rides are ‘NO DROP’ rides and the group with either wait for you to catch up at regroup points along the way or accompany you back to the starting point.
A Pace (competitive) 20-22 mph
Is for the competitive cyclist in a training environment looking for the challenge to ride at the upper end of their abilities within a group that will push the pace; however, these group rides are not races. The cyclists ride in a tight single or double line paceline. This is typically a DROP ride.
B Pace (spirited/enthusiast) 17-18 mph
Is for the cyclist who enjoys riding at a fast pace and likes a challenge but is not interested in the race-like training conditions of the ‘A’ group. This is typically a NO-DROP ride unless specified.
C Pace (recreational) 14-15 mph
Is for the cyclist who is more interested in a recreational ride, with planned rest and water breaks if necessary. This is a NO DROP ride.

Westside Wanderers
"These are morning no-drop social rides on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday or Sunday starting at the Whispering Bean/Fat Tire parking lot on Coors at Alameda. Starting times vary by season between 8 and 10 AM. We ride around 40 miles (+/- 10%) in all directions from the start for about 3 to 3.5 hours, generally on or within the perimeter defined by Algodones, Tramway, Isleta Pueblo and Atrisco Vista. All ages are welcome. Riders may join along the route and leave the ride before the end with notice to the ride leader. There is no limit to the group size, but usually 7 to 12 riders join with an average/median age between 65 and 70 including two octogenarians. Paceline skills are necessary for our usual flat-road-no-wind speeds of 15 to 19 mph. Use of a rear-view mirror is encouraged. We require that the penultimate rider maintains contact with the last rider in the group. Stronger riders often join us on Mondays and may separate from other riders. We have one nature stop and we regroup at least on all climbs. This is a great ride for maturing men and women to stay active and meet new friends. We usually gather for coffee at Whispering Bean after the ride but sometimes stop for coffee along the ride route." Rides are managed via Google group: https://groups.google.com/g/westside-wanderers
